Even still, the nation’s security depends upon a steady flow of soldiers, and corporations have formed to funnel in new recruits. At the leading company, a donated child yields a payout of $200,000, enough to feed a family of three for a year. That’s how Ivan Tucker ended up in the Municipal, and how he came to be the United States military’s most valued weapon. When the young augmented reality psychologist responsible for Tucker’s conditioning gets pulled into a world of ethical crises, she realizes that she already has the most important weapon in her hands. But can that weapon be reprogrammed? Should it be?
